E-mail message from Gene:
Over the next few weeks I will be going through our CD Rom collection downstairs to determine what we can run on the CD ROM station that is in the microfilm/fiche room. So far I have looked at the County & City Data Book, the Statistical Abastract of the US, Census Catalog, and County Business Patterns, and have found that the files on these CDs can be opened with Adobe Acrobat or Excel viewer, or else the CD has its own program for reading the contents of the CD.
The station has a desktop image that says "This Station is for CD ROM use only. Please ask at circulation for assistance." The computer does not have internet access, and very little software capability. If someone asks for assistance with the CD, please try to help them if possible (once you put the cd in it should hopefully be obvious what to do next!) but if you have trouble, please don't hesitate to refer the question to me. If I'm not here, you can always tell the individual that they need to contact me by email/phone to make an appointment.
The computer should remain on, but if for some reason it gets turned off or rebooted, here is the log in information: Username: CDuser Password: business cd computer. Please note that the login is case sensitive.
I hope to go through the list of CDs that Janet and Kate put together
(Thanks!) and make a notebook showing what type of viewer is needed for each CD set. I'll keep you informed of the progress!
