Student log-in problems

Students seem to be pretty stressed out these days and either forgetting their identikey log-in or typing it wrong when wanting to use an ITS computer. After 5 tries the computer locks their account, but it will reset in about 10 minutes if they wait.

We can troubleshoot it by using our log-in and going to http://adsync.colorado.edu . If they enter their identikey and password correctly it will synchronize their password and they are set to log back in.

Computer Problems

ITS has requested that we report any computer problems on their Lab Maintenance Request at http://webdata.colorado.edu/labs/report1.php and not by phone. Follow the instructions on the page - our labs are KOBL 100B and KOBL 200. I've created a shortcut on the desktop at the reference desk, and the link is also in the Favorites list.

For printer problems we should continue to call 5-help (5-4357).

Simmons now available

Simmons Choices 3 is now working on all the computers in the computer lab 100B. It works only on computer #30 in the Info Commons - that's the computer nearest the entrance to the library.

Teamrooms Access

There is a 2-5 minute delay from the time a room reservation is made to the time the Buffcard will work in the door. Students have been making a reservation, going to the room, and then coming to the circ desk saying their card won't work. We need to tell them to wait a few minutes and then try again. If they had just cancelled a reservation and made a new one, it may take up to 5 minutes for their card to work. If their card still doesn't work they need to go upstairs to Room 311 - Leeds Technology Services, open 8am-7pm; the phone number is 5-3337.

Guest User Accounts for Internet

WIRELESS NETWORKING FOR CAMPUS VISITORS

Now when your colleagues or friends visit the CU-Boulder campus you can give them access to wireless networking throughout the campus in one of two ways. The new UCB Guest Wireless service http://www.colorado.edu/its/wireless/guest gives sponsored guests access to public-facing web pages for up to five days.

To establish an account for your guest, follow these steps:
(Right now, you must use Firefox when you are setting up the account, and the user must use Firefox to access the log in screen.)
1) You must log in with your own identikey and password at:
http://ucbguestsponsor.colorado.edu/
2) Select the option to create a new user and enter the name and valid date/time information
3) The system will assign a log in and password for the user

When the guest is ready to log in, they must follow these steps:
To access UCB Guest Wireless:
1) Select UCB Guest as your wireless network.
2) Open a web browser and go to www.colorado.edu. They will be automatically redirected to a login page.
3) Use the guest username and password to login in.
4) After logging in they will be redirected to an information web page about UCB Guest Wireless.
They are now free to use UCB Guest Wireless for basic Internet activity.
If the web browser allows pop-ups, there will be a window that has a log out button. The guest should click on this button when they are done using UCB Guest Wireless.

NOTE: UCB Guest Wireless only provides general Internet use. Guests cannot access CU-Boulder resources that require on-campus connections, such as Library resources and other protected servers and services that are provided strictly for CU-Boulder affiliated students, faculty and staff members.

Those visitors that are on campus for a conference or who require access to non-public facing CU-Boulder resources such as library resources can request a Conference IdentiKey at http://www.colorado.edu/its/docs/accounts/conference.html

Two New databases added to the homepage

I have added two new databases to that you are free to peruse.

Pidgin Instant Messaging - Testing

Pidgin was installed on the reference computer Friday. For the most part, it works just like Meebo. Here is how you can get started experimenting with it.

Double click on the Pidgin icon on the desktop.
Click the ADD button on the window that appears.
The following screen will ask you for some information.
The first thing you need to change is the protocol.
Click the arrow next to the AIM icon, and then choose XMPP
The username is wmwbuslib
The domain is libraryh3lp.com
Leave the Resource as Home
Finally, the password is Bluesky1(don't forget the capital B)

You should see a new screen that shows you are available.
You may click close on the window with the close and add buttons.
Now that you are available you can ask yourself a question. Fun Fun.

Teamroom Access Not Fixed

I haven't had any word from LTS about using Buffcards again. It looks like we will continue to check out keys until further notice.
Remember that students need to make a reservation on the system before coming to the circ desk for the key. They need to tell the person the room number they have reserved and present their Buffcard. The key will be checked out for two hours even if they have a shorter reservation time.
Hopefully, the problem will be fixed next week and we can enjoy the new system again.

Teamroom Access Problems Update

LTS just informed me that we are going to have to use the keys again for the next few days. They are putting a notice on the reservation system alerting the students they have to come to the library for a key after making the reservation. We will check out the keys online the same as before, but they need to have their Buffcard, and the key will automatically check out for two hours. We won't know how long the reservation is for unless we look at the reservation system, so it's possible there could be a few shorter reservations that overlap, but we can deal with those if it comes up. It's early in the semester and the rooms probably won't all be reserved - at least we can hope!

Simmons in the Computer Lab

Students can run searches on Simmons in the computer lab downstairs. We can have four concurrent users access the database which will continue until the subscription problem is resolved.

Also, because of the Simmons problem ITS discovered when they installed Vista on the computers in the Info Commons, they did not change the computers in the lab.

Windows Vista

Just wanted to let everyone know that windows vista is on the computers in the information commons. You might want to check it out when you get a chance.

Excel Assessment Test Update

Students needing to taking the Excel Assessment can now take them on all the computers in Room 320. They can also take it on their personal Windows based computer, but it cannot be taken in the Info Commons. There is an old version of the assessment on the Info Commons computers so we may get some questions when they try and it doesn't work.

Ad$pender - New Database

Available in the business library only, AdSpender is the online continuation of the print volumes of Ad $ Summary which stopped coming in 2005. It requires a username and password on reserve at the circ desk and is restricted to current UCB students and faculty. See the Library homepage for a description of the database.

Adjustments to the list of databases on the homepage

Proquest Central has been added to the list of databases we subscribe to, however the following have been cancelled: Promt, Business Index ASAP and InfoTrac Small Business Collection have been canceled since we now have PQ Central. Within ProQuest Central there are other databases that can be searched including hoovers, historical annual reports, snapshots, banking information, etc.

Greenhouse Scholars

The Greenhouse Scholars Program will be using the first floor of the library and the tech team rooms next Monday and Tuesday, August 11th and 12th. They will be coming in on Friday afternoon to do some setting up. Ann Sandoe from the MBA office is the contact person for information or questions.

New Circref category

The new circref category CAREERS has books on writing resumes and cover letters, as well as several new books on specific careers.

Books in circref (located behind the Circulation Desk) do not leave the library, but may be checked out for two hours. Circref books are reference books which have been determined to require more oversight than those in the Reference collection.

Excel Assessment

Students are starting to ask about taking the Excel Assessment test for the fall semester. It cannot be taken on the computers in the Info Commons. They can take it on their personal Windows based computer, or upstairs in KOBL 320, but only on the first row of laptops.

The Business Library e-mail address should be checked daily. Currently Kate is checking it, but in her absence any of us can check it. Kate has been replying to messages she can answer and cc'ing Gene. She then moves the message to a folder called "Answered" in the column on the left. Other messages she forwards to Gene. This seems to be a good procedure for us to follow as well so we have a record of how much traffic the address is getting. Contact Kate or Janet for the username and password.

Color Printing for Students

I've learned that there are several places on campus where students can do color printing at a CPI printer using their BuffOne cards. The closest lab is ECCR 252 (Engineering Bldg.); others include Norlin N310, UMC 138, and two labs in the Atlas Bldg. Cost is 50 cents per page.
