Photocopier Not Working

The copier continues to misfeed so the technician has been called. Hopefully, he will come in the morning to fix a part in one of the trays that misfeeds the paper. Ours is the only public copier in the building for students to use. The closest one is in the Engineering Library in the Math Building.

E-Reserves

This message came from Norlin's Reserves Department regarding passwords for e-reserves.

Hello from Norlin Reserves to any of you who staff a service desk:

If students are having trouble accessing electronic readings with the password their instructors have given them, suggest that they try the password in all lower case with no spaces between letters or numbers. Reserves has tried to change all the passwords to lower case (and inform the instructors) to avoid confusion; however some instructors may not have gotten the message.

Also, you can view the course password by going into staff mode in My Chinook, going to Reserves on the Libraries home page and pulling up the course by typing in the instructor's name. The password appears below the item ID list.

Creating Publication Alerts in ProQuest

Here is an example of creating an alert for the New York Times.



Start by finding the publication. You'll need to go directly to the publications tab since using the default search will not link you to the correct alerts page.




Click on the link to set an alert.




Choose the frequency and duration of the alert. It isn't necessary to use your @colorado email address.





Follow the link in your confirmation email to activate the alert.

Finding Tearsheets in Mergent Online

The Mergent Online interface has changed and some of the content has moved. To find the tearsheets (a.k.a. "factsheets"), select the "reports" tab.

Of the sub-categories within the reports tab, choose "Mergent Reports."

There will be several choices for the type of report. Choose "factsheet." You'll see a preview of the factsheet on the right. To see the full-size image, click on the Adobe icon underneath the preview. It is a very tiny icon.

Public Patron Printing

Public patrons wanting to print from our computers have to buy a printer card available at one of the following locations:
Norlin Library - VTS machine
Law Library - VTS machine
Willard Hall - Campus Card Office
All patron cards cost $1.00 and then require adding money to print. They can be recharged at any of the locations listed above, or on-line using a credit card at BuffOneCard. com.

Printing from Laptops

Instructions and driver downloads are here. The drivers have been upgraded to support the 64-bit operating systems.

SCARPIE computers

The two SCARPIE computers near the north windows in the Info Commons can only be used to check e-mail and campus information. There is no word processing software and they do not print.

Webchat tricks from Mark Mabbett

a. If when you log in you don't see people in Buddies (and you're sure
someone should be there) you can switch your status from Available to Unavailable back to Available and it should pick up the status of other people. You may have to do this a couple of times and Libraryh3lp is currently working on this so that soon we don't even have to toggle our status. I think people have been doing this by logging in and out.

b. There are also times when the browser resizes and you lose the top
edge of the chat or the Buddy List which makes it so that you can't transfer a chat or move the window around because you can't grab the top of the window. To fix this hit F11 and your web address bar will disappear. Hit
F11 again and it will come back with the chat windows and Buddy list in the correct place.

c. The chat window shows the referring URL and IP address. The URL is
clickable so you can see exactly where a patron is coming from-the exact search in Chinook or exact research guide. Also the IP address will tell you whether someone needs to log into the VPN or if they are already on campus. Any IP that starts with 128.138.XXX.XXX is on campus and any IP that starts 198.11.XXX.XXX is logged into the VPN. I just like this information to know whether or not I need to send Alison H's Jing video about the VPN.

Corporate Political Spending

Two websites to learn about political spending, track donations, and follow congressional activity.

MapLight.org is the website of the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of the same name. Search for bills, issues, senators, representatives, or companies and follow the spending. This database uses three data sets (see the "about" section for descriptions).

OpenSecrets.org this website is a "nonpartisan guide to money's influence on U.S. elections and public policy." This one is more news-oriented than MapLight and has a great blog.
