Problems with Investext

Investext will only work using Internet Explorer. When you try to open any of the historical SEC documents, you may get the "pop up blocker" message at the top of the screen. To open the file, you have to click the message a the top of the screen that says "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site..." etc.

Right click on that message, and you will see the option to open the file.

Then the file should open in Excel. If it does not open the first time, you should be able to click on the link for the document again and it will open. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Investext Reports

Corey Seeman, the Director of the Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan recently sent this email regarding Investext reports. We subscribe to Investext through Thomson Research, but it is listed on our webpages under "Investext." This may be helpful for figuring out how to navigate, so I wanted to share it with you all.

Investext Analyst Reports - Thomson Research
• Research Reports will appear on the upper right hand side of the data for the companies that you are searching. It also shows up on the first page. Click on that link to conduct a search.
• If you have pulled up a company record, Thomson Research will show the most recent reports for that company. You can also pull up three different groups of reports:
o Click Morning Meeting Notes to view the collection that contains "timely information on companies and industries from analysts at some of the world's leading investment banks."
o Click Investext Research Reports to view the collection of Investext reports "authored by top analysts from over 800 brokerage houses, investment banks, and consulting firms worldwide."
o Click Complete Reports List to view both of these reports together.
• Viewing Reports
o Once you have found reports via the search or browse, you can view them.
o Select the reports that you wish to view (clicking in the check box)
o Click the View button.
 At this point, you can select either the full report (check box next to the investment bank's name) or individual pages.
 If you are using Internet Explorer, you can click on the Select All button. If you are using Firefox, you need to re-select the reports individually.
o Click the View button to open the PDF.
o Thomson Research will pull together ALL the selected reports into a single PDF file.
• Additional Notes
o Ignore the cost associated with the report - that is for informational purposes only. Our subscription to this database pays for all usage.
o The Email Order will only send report information, NOT the full reports.
o The Save Results to File option will only send the report information such as titles, authors, & dates.

FAX Services

We're getting lots of requests for a fax machine this year. The Ink Spot in the UMC is the only place on campus where students can fax materials. I don't know the cost. The closest place off-campus that I know of is Kinko's in the Basemar Center on Baseline across the street from the Law School.

Software on ITS Computers in Business Library

Today I had two reference questions asking if specific software was available on the lab computers. If you are unsure, you can check the list of software at this site:

Just click on the name of the lab (in the Business Library it would be either KOBL 100B or KOBL 200) and you will get a list of the software loaded on those machines. I've put this link into Blink as well, so if you lose the email, you can always search Blink for "computer labs" or "computer software" and it should come up.

Consumer Confidence Survey from Conference Board

The Consumer Confidence Survey from Conference Board is no longer available in print--older editions on shelves, but print stopped in 2009. The electronic version is available in both Factiva and Business Index ASAP, by doing a search on "Consumer Confidence Survey."

Registration and Excel Assessment

Registration will be in Room 320. For students who ask about taking the Excel Assessment, please send them to room 380.

CPI Printers Upgrade

The CPI printing system has been upgraded as of this week. The students who print remotely from their laptops to the Info Commons and Computer Lab 100B printers from a Windows platform will need to install new printer drivers. They are available at http://www.colorado.edu/cpi/remote/downloads.htm.

Please be aware of this so we can tell returning students who used their laptops for printing last year and now can't print. They may come to the reference or circulation desks for assistance and we can give them the website; as usual, if they have problems they need to contact the ITS HelpDesk at 5-HELP on campus, or 303-735-4357 off-campus.

The username and password for WebChat is:

Remember that a new chat message opens in the same window as the Buddies list so white space to the left of the list needs to be visible. Since we now have sound on the computer, we don't have to stare at the screen looking for a message to pop up.

You can change your status from Available to Away, etc., by clicking on the down arrow next to "Available" and selecting one of the other choices.

Printing Problems

We aren't having printing problems, just slowness. Sometimes between classes students are trying to print materials for their next class in a hurry and come to the ref desk to say the printers aren't working. I have found that many are trying to print PowerPoint slides, 6 on each side of double-sided paper for a total of 12 slides in one print job. Because it is graphics and not just text the printers can take a long time to complete the job. I noticed earlier this week that the slides were shaded as well, which added to the job.

So, I suggest that we ask what they are trying to print before putting in a call to the HelpDesk. If there is a problem with a paper jam or toner, flip over the sign attached to the print release station so students will use another printer. Then call the HelpDesk at 5-HELP (5-4357)to report the problem.

Megastat Program for Business Students

Several of the business students have come to the ref desk to ask where they can access a program called Megastats. If you get this question, please refer them to the computers in 320 and 380. We don't have it installed in the Learning Commons.

Standard & Poor's Research Insight

Research Insight, the financial software used by Michael Stutzer and some other professors in the Business School, has been installed on all the computers in 100B. It is gradually being installed on the computers in the Info Commons but isn't complete yet.

Students are being taught how to access and use the software, but in case they ask where it is, here are the steps for getting into it:
1. From the start menu, open Excel
2. Along the top row of the toolbar click on "Add-Ins"
3. A wide shaded workspace opens below the toolbar with "RI Web" identified in the first column
4. Enter the ticker symbol in the search box
5. Choose "Report" to get results; there is a lot of data so it can take 1-2 minutes to download

The students should know how to proceed from here. We have a set of manuals on Circ Reserve that are a few years old, but I've been told that the software probably hasn't changed much and could be checked out to students wanting more information.

Bloomberg Room 100S

Bloomberg will be in heavy use this semester, as a professor assigned it to her class. Please remind the patrons that they get it for only the two hours that they have it signed-up for. If they are more than 15 minutes late, we can give the room to someone else. I will make a sign for the desk.

Bloomberg Terminal Upgrade

With the new upgrade to the Bloomberg terminal in the library and with the help of the LTS staff, the Bloomberg terminal now allows users to create an interactive spreadsheet in Excel. Bloomberg offers a variety of functions that let you pull data directly into the spreadsheet. In addition, you can also print the Bloomberg screens to a PDF file, or email the screens to your email account. Please note that because much of the Bloomberg data is proprietary, you cannot export the spreadsheets to another computer; when there are functions in the spreadsheet that pull the data out of the Bloomberg system, they will only work while you are logged into the Bloomberg terminal.

Online Access to Advertising Age

I've set up an online account for the link to Advertising Age, listed in the Advertising Industry category in our Research Guides by Topic section. The online version provides access to all articles in the print edition plus other information students might find useful.
The user name is "business library" and the password is "buffaloes" (no quotes). The circ desk will also have a folder that students can check out.
